The altars, like this one at Francis Xavier on Metairie Road are filled with foods that are rich in symbolism.
This altar is very large and the people there quite welcoming. Check out the fava bean jewelry, which helps raise money for the parish: earrings, necklaces and pins made from fava beans. It is open today from 9 to 6, with meals from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or until food runs out. Pasta Milanese, anyone?

I have seen whole rosaries made out of cupcakes at St. Joseph Day altars in New Orleans. This lovely cross was at Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos in Dauphone Street.

What a lovely way to display a stuffed artichoke. Saw this flower at St. Rita's in Harahan. It is open today from from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Meals will be served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Didn't eat there yesterday, but it smelled divine (if you'll pardon the expression.)

The Archdiocese of New Orleans collects altar locations. You can find them here:Http://www.NOLACatholic.org. Check the altar list before heading out. Many are open today, the actual feast day of the patron saint of Sicily. Many serve meals around lunch and supper time today as well.
