Roger Federer's Indian Wells match rescheduled for Sunday after rain halts play

Roger Federer’s first match at Indian Wells was halted due to rain Saturday night on Stadium Court at the BNP Paribas Open.
The top-seed in the men’s draw will conclude his match with Frederic Delbonis of Argentina on Sunday in Stadium 1, after Novak Djokovic plays Taro Daniel in the second match of the day.
Federer won the first set, 6-3, and the second set was tied, 2-2, when rain initially halted action just before 9 p.m. The match was officially halted for the night at 10:35 p.m.
Saturday marked the first time in more than a decade that matches at the tournament were postponed a day. Rain has caused delays since, most recently in 2016, but those delays were relatively short and matches resumed the same day.
Federer’s match was not the only one postponed by a persistent rain Saturday evening. The 10th seed in the women’s draw, Angelique Kerber, may have been saved when her match against unseeded Ekaterina Makarova was also rescheduled for Sunday.
Kerber lost the first set, 3-6, and the second seed was just getting underway when the match was delayed and later called for the night. Kerber will finish her match as the third match on Stadium 2 on Sunday.
The nightcap match on Stadium Court was also postponed for the night. American Sloane Stephens, the 13th seed in the women’s draw, was scheduled to play two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Victoria Azarenka following the Federer-Delbonis match in Stadium 1. The two will play as the second match in Stadium 2, not before 12:30 p.m.
Karolina Pliskova will play Shaui Zhang as the second match on Stadium 4 on Sunday. The two were originally scheduled to play in Stadium 2, yet were moved to make room for the Stephens-Azarenka match.
Tickets to Sunday's action, which already included several big matches and big names, appear to have even more appeal now.
